In the United Kingdom, the first official nudist club was established in Wickford, Essex in 1924. According to Michael Farrar, writing for British Naturism the club adopted the name X from the name of the owner of the ground, and called its site The Camp. A referrence to this club has been made in a latest season of Downton Abbey.
